Today I am going to start a series of Experts interview, In which I will take the interviews of our industries experts. It is going to be great fun for everyone as I am going to ask some interesting questions from experts and their answers will definitely help to everyone. :)

My first guest is Brain Dean from Back Linko

1. Please tell us something about your seo journey so far.

It’s been a wild ride. I first got introduced to SEO after launching a nutrition-focused ebook in 2009. After spending a few months working on the product and the site, I realized that I was missing something VERY important: traffic.

Because I didn’t have a huge marketing budget, PPC was pretty much out. That left SEO.

It took me over 2-years of failing to finally put the pieces together. But once I did, SEO went from a huge frustration to something I legitimately loved.

2. Did you ever use any black hat technique for any campaign and why?

I used to use ONLY black hat techniques.

You have to remember that SEO in 2009/2010 was VERY different than it is today. Back then, it didn’t make sense to do white hat SEO. The ROI just didn’t make sense.

But I’ve recently abandoned black hat SEO because I don’t see it working well anymore.

3. Do you think the OLD seo techniques are still useful, if we use them in right way?

It depends on what you mean by “old”. If you mean pre-2007, then yes. Back then, there were very few “link building services” or SEO software options.

In other words, you had to create a great site and get the word out about it via email outreach. That stuff works today better than ever.

What doesn’t work are “old” techniques like web directories, article directories and spammy guest blogging.

4. Which seo tools you like personally for seo campaigns and why?

I’m not a huge tools guy. There are some that make my job easier, but I find that most don’t add much to my business.

That being said, here are three that I use all the time:

  • SEMRush: For finding keywords that don’t always show up in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.
  • Authority Labs: A tool I’ve been using more and more lately for tracking keyword positions.

5. Do you think SEO is getting harder and harder nowadays?

Definitely.

But in my opinion, that’s a good thing. Back when SEO was easy (pre- Penguin), anyone with a credit card could rank for competitive terms. It was a game of whoever could buy the most links.

Today, SEO takes skill, hard work…and a marketing budget. Just look at Guestographics as an example of a hard (yet effective) SEO strategy. You need to come up with an infographic topic, find data, pay for a stellar design, and email a ton of people to promote your infographic.

Compare all that with buying some spammy web 2.0 links from a forum. It takes A LOT more work. But for the SEOs out there that can execute this sort of thing, the rewards are huge.

6. SEO or Social Media? Who will dominate 2014?

Most people would probably say: “both are important”. As someone that’s tried both, I can say without any reluctance that SEO will dominate in terms of high-converting traffic.

Social is great for some things (especially engaging with an audience), but in general, it doesn’t convert nearly as well as search engine traffic.

7. Do you think Google Plus is going to be next ranking factor?

I can see it becoming more important in the next few years. Look: Google knows that social signals are a great way to gauge the value of a page. The only issue is: they’re not able to measure it very well because most of the big social media sites (like Faceook and Pinterest) are owned by 3rd parties.

Google Plus is obviously an exception. And it makes sense to me that they’d use Google+ ‘s from authoritative accounts as a ranking signal.

8. The future of SEO in coming years?

I’m not one for predicting the next big thing in SEO (after all, who would have predicted Panda or Hummingbird?).

But I think that the future of SEO is simply a better Google algorithm. In other words, it’s going to be more difficult to game the algo. So if you want to rank #1 you better make sure you create a site that deserves to be there.

9. How Do You Measure Your Success?

In terms of SEO, I don’t focus too much on rankings. My ultimate measure of SEO success is search engine traffic.

Obviously, the ultimate measure of business success is revenue :-)

10. Any Pro Tip for our users.

Yes. If you run a blog, only publish if you have something amazing to share. Otherwise your hard work will get lost in all the noise.

In other words, instead of 5 blog posts publish one long 2500+ word guide. You’ll get a lot more traffic, shares and links that way.

  9. Thanks for publishing this! I especially like his last point. We see clients getting frustrated all the time that their blogs aren’t seeing any traffic, despite putting hours and hours in every month – because none of their posts stand out! I am definitely a proponent of quality over quantity in this case, both in terms of results and user experience. There’s just too much out there to sift through to waste your time on an “average” post.
